Is Santa Barbara dog-friendly? Absolutely! As I sit here on vacation in Santa Barbara, California, I couldn’t help but notice all the dogs. I love California for its weather, beaches, wineries, and how dog-friendly it is. Every California city, in my experience, has an abundant number of residents out & about with their dog and we love everything about it.
Sitting with the ocean and dogs surrounding me, I thought it would be the perfect time to write up a quick list of dog-friendly options in Santa Barbara. From beaches, parks and trails, to dog-friendly cafes, tasting rooms and wineries, there are plenty of activities for your pup to enjoy with you. Please confirm pet-friendly accommodations and reservations before heading out.
Hotels
There are around 55 dog-friendly hotels in Santa Barbara but some, in particular, caught our attention.
Four Seasons The Biltmore Santa Barbara - They allow up to two pets up to 50 pounds for no additional fee. Cats and dogs are both allowed but may not be left unattended. Casa Del Mar – located ½ block from the ocean, this hotel is pet-friendly. They allow up to two pets per room with a pet fee of $15 per pet per night. To inquire with the hotel, click here.
Santa Barbara Kimpton Canary Hotel – Kimpton totally gets why leaving your pet at home is hard. That’s why their entire Kimpton chain is pet-friendly! Not only are they dog-friendly but they’re ALL animal friendly. Birds? Yes! Reptiles? Absolutely! Cats? Pack them a suitcase! Hotel Indigo Santa Barbara - Located downtown near the beach and famous State Street, Hotel Indigo allows up to 2 pets under 55 pounds. The pets can’t be left unattended in the room and must be on a leash at all times. There is a nonrefundable pet deposit of $40USD per stay. To inquire with the hotel, click here.
Beaches
There are dog-friendly beaches in Santa Barbara as well!
Arroyo Burro Beach (also called Hendry’s Beach) is the only beach in Santa Barbara that allows dogs off-leash. It’s the perfect spot to let your dog frolic in the water and grab brunch, lunch or dinner at the popular seaside restaurant, Boathouse Hendry’s Beach.
Butterfly – located in Montecito, is perfect for surfing and sunbathing. Dogs are welcomed, but need to remain on a leash at all times.
Shoreline Park – dogs are allowed off-leash in a designated part of the beach but must remain on-leash in the park.
Summerland – located just south of downtown Santa Barbara, is a dog-friendly beach but dogs must remain on a leash. It’s the perfect park to spend all day relaxing and take a break from all your stress. Once you’re finished, you can head to the Summerland boutique tasting room for some dog-friendly wine tasting on their patio.
Wineries in Wine Country
Almost all tasting rooms in Santa Barbara are dog friendly with their open-air patios. They do require dogs to be leashed and some of them ask for you to please keep paws off the furniture. If you’re planning to make the beautiful drive to wine country where the grapes are grown, here are a few of wineries that welcome dogs.
Babcock Winery & Vineyard in Lompoc’s Sta. Rita Hills allows dogs but must be leashed at all times.
Presqu’ile Winery in Santa Maria Valley has plenty of space for your dog to roam around. Not only does their winemaking team have their dogs on property but they’ve produced special bottlings to benefit the Humane Society
Sunstone Winery in Santa Ynez Valley is a beautiful estate winery surrounded by vineyards located 35 minutes north of Santa Barbara.
Foxen Vineyard & Winery in Santa Maria has 2 tasting locations and dogs are welcomed at both.
Fess Parker Winery & Vineyard in Los Olivos welcomes dogs off-leash on their beautiful grounds.
Alma Rosa Winery & Vineyards in Buellton in about an hour north of Santa Barbara. Some guests might recognize it from the movie Sideways but the casual and relaxed vibe of the winery is perfect for a day of R&R.
